Black Economic EmpowermentSACD Freight is committed to Black Economic Empowerment, which we regard as both a national and business imperative. We believe that Black Economic Empowerment plays a vital role in the transformation process by opening up opportunities to those individuals or entities that have been historically disadvantaged. Through our own Black Economic Empowerment practices, we at SACD aim to positively contribute to the growth and development of the country. SACD OverviewSACD Freight is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the BidVest Group (Level 5 contributor). SACD Freight has been rated as a Level 4 contributor (“A”) by Empowerdex, an accredited independent rating agency. SACD has also been classified as a “value added supplier” – this implies that for every R1 spent with SACD, our customers can claim R1.25 as BEE spend. BEE ScorecardOwnershipAs a 100% held subsidiary, SACD Freight's effective black ownership percentage is identical to and reflects that of its holding company, BidVest. This means that 26.7% of legal ownership of SACD is held by black people with 13.7% held by black females. ManagementAt an executive board level, black representation is 28.57%, (adjusted for gender). 2 of the 7 directors are black, 1 of whom is female. Preferential ProcurementBEE procurement represents 53% of total purchases. SACD have a preferential procurement policy in place such that BEE companies receive preference where service and other requirements are equal. Enterprise DevelopmentSACD acknowledges that, due to a lack of funding, access to support infrastructure, and a shortage of management skills, black SME’s are often unable to fund and/or sustain their operations in the long term. Accordingly, it is our objective to support and encourage the development of enterprises with sufficient black ownership and/or contributor status by means of infrastructural and operational support. Existing enterprise development schemes result in a score of 5.4 (out of 15). Socio Economic DevelopmentSocio economic initiatives are varied and includes monthly contributions an orphanage in Khayalitsha, a township in Cape Town, monthly contributions of cash and employees time to a soup kitchen in Tafelsig; as well as significant contributions to the Durban Community Chest. ConclusionAddressing the persisting economic disparities in South Africa requires a concerted and sustained effort by all stakeholders, particularly the broader business community.
