15/07/04 - SACD expands warehouse capacity

SACD Freight is set to dramatically increase its warehouse space by 25 000 m across its facilities in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town.

The new Durban warehouse which was taken into service in March 2005, will provide a large customer with an exclusive and unique facility close to the biggest port in Africa at minimal freight and shipping costs. The warehouse is serviced by an efficient rail service from/ to the inland hub port of City Deep in Johannesburg to the port of Durban in KwaZulu Natal.

Increased export demand from blue chip companies like Sasol and Hulett Aluminum have necessitated the expansion of the Durban facility.

In Johannesburg a 5 000 m custom designed warehouse for mining and agricultural products coming from Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and the DRC has been completed.

In Cape Town, a new site of 7.3 hectares is being developed and will comprise of a 10 000 m warehouse, full and empty container operations, provision for reefer electrical plug-in points and office accommodation.

The capital expenditure in Cape Town will be approximately R63m and will provide state of the art warehousing for food the service industry including wine, canned goods and fruit juice.
